Music Projects comments
Music has played a very critical role in my life. Particularly during the lows of my life, music has been there. When a feeling couldn’t be spoken or verbally articulated, it was there.
I would like this page and its subsequent children to showcase some of the recordings I’ve done over the years.
While those who know me in person know of my penchant for the guitar, from early 1998 till about 2001 I was regularly cranking out house and electronic music under different names. These efforts were pretty inane, looking back at them, but for a time I was very popular on various mp3 websites like mp3.com, IUMA, and audiogalaxy (even making it onto one of their first compilation promotional cds).
DJ Killian
My first project was DJ Killian (nee Killian), in which I dabbled with on-the-fly mixing of loops and beats. I used a program called Mixman Studio to mix things on the fly and export the end result to mp3. I probably had the most fun with this little program. Years later I would do another track under this name and re-release my music on download.com. As of today, this project has over 370,000 listens on Download.com.
Still, I discovered there were more intriguing samples out there to play with for my next project, Project Noone. The samples I used for this project were of much higher quality and I had a lot of fun stringing together these pieces in the wee hours of the morning. So much that I thought, vainly, of starting my own record label called Sleep Deprivation Records. I was going to school full-time and working, and loving the occasional fan mail I’d get from random web-passersby.
Two Project Noone Mp3 albums are available for you to download if you follow the link.
Last Man on Mars
My third project was really more abstract, taking long droning samples and rigging some with beats. This “musical” endeavor was called Last Man on Mars. I republished some of my Project Noone stuff under this name as well, but mostly what I created was a 20 minute or so sound piece called “Dream of the Butterfly”. The concept behind it was that of a wayward astronaut in a coma in an escape capsule. I know, it sounds pretty prog, but that’s what I had in mind while doing it.
Mission from Music Mixing
It was shortly after this period that I began taking on some part-time work as a DJ for choreographers for my friend Casey’s side business, Mission from Music Mixing. Working with Casey, we’ve built up a nice, select, clientele for whom I have created custom dance routine music. If you are ever in need of some music editing, drop me a line. The rates are reasonable.
Acoustic / Singer-songwriter Stuff
From 2001 to now I have been recording acoustic covers of songs I like in my home. Since living on my own, these recordings have become surprisingly less frequent, although I think my chops are better than ever. I hope to share some of my more original work here in the future.
Miscellaneous Experiments
Throughout the years I’ve occasionally published some work under my own name. I would compile these tracks every now and then and release a record independently for kicks. These were mostly just experiments with loops, going for more of an “incidental” sound than anything in particular. Two records that I “self-published” were “the minimalist.” and “negative | reality”.
